About reeds

1.

Choosing the type of reed

Reed types can be distinguished according to the colour of the binding thread

European scraped colours: fiery red, royal blue, burgundy, purple, emerald green, sea green,

American scraped colours: orange, turquoise,

2.

Choosing reed strength

Three different strength category reeds are made from all types which are marked by a letter printed on the tube.

S – M – H

Meaning of letters – the thickness of the gouged cane

S – (Soft)

Planing thickness: 0,55 – 0,56 mm

Easy to blow, good intonation, especially recommended for beginners

M – (Medium)

Planing thickness: 0,57 – 0,58 mm

Moderately bulky, sensitive sound for intermediate and professional players seeking a reed with good intonation

H – (Hard)

Planing thickness: 0,59 – 0,60 mm

For oboist that prefer greater resistance or professionals who like to shape their reed to their own personal needs

The length of scraping / the profile cannot be changed to a significant degree.

Further information

I exclusively use the best quality materials – brands.

Tubes: Prestini, KGE, Guercio, Chiarugi
Length 46 – 47 mm

Binding threads: Size 20 synthetic leather sewing Gral brand threads manufactured by Coats,

The copper wire loop helps with the appropriate setting of the reed opening. American style reeds do not require wiring.

The reed material originates from France, Turkey and China and is of exceptional quality.

Reed tube diameter: smaller diameter = rounder opening

About gouging: the ratio of thickness of the gouged reed material’s (plank) centre and side is also an important aspect. Here you can see three – different – gouged cane with 0,60 thickness.

centre ~0,60 mm, sides ~0,40-0,42 mm

centre ~0,60 mm, sides ~0,45 mm

centre ~0,60 mm, sides~0,50 mm

The first plank – with thinner sides – results in a more flexible reed.
